Discover the history of Thomas Jefferson's University

Historical Tours tell the story of our University. They run approximately an hour and focus on the University's entire history, from its beginnings under founder Thomas Jefferson, to its transformation to one of the top universities in the country. On this tour, you will get to explore the Rotunda and the Academical Village.

Every tour is different! The tour guides each craft their own tours, incorporating different stories and different themes. There is no set “script” for our tours.

Tours begin in the Lower East Oval Room of the Rotunda, which can be accessed from the basement level. The entrance is underneath the South stairs, which are on the Lawn side of the Rotunda. They run every day at 10am, 11am, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm and last about one hour.

Please note that the Guide Service does not offer tours during UVA’s Winter Break, spring recess, during exam periods, or over the summer.
